The Dumbest Generation? Doubt it.

The recent book named The Dumbest Generation by Mark Bauerlein, talks about how the new generation coming into the world is a generation of know nothings who spend all of their time using pointless tools on the internet to be social and feel like their opinion matters.  Now, since I am in this generation, Mr. Bauerlein is trying to tell me I don't expect to work for anything in my life and I have too many choices. He is telling me that I just expect to be handed my future and that my opinion really doesn't matter.  Well, the opinion idea probably is correct, but as I could careless about his opinion, most people could care less about what I think, or what anyone else does unless it is the opinion of a close friend or family member.  But, I believe this goes for all generations, including Mark Bauerlein's, apparently "superior" (ha) generation.  As for working for everything in my life, I do believe I am very fortunate like many others in my generation as for being given the opportunity to go to college and live in the conditions I have.  If he tells me or anyone else that they do not work for anything in their lives I will turn around and show him all of the kids stuck in the library all day for a week studying for bio tests.  I will take him to the weight room everyday for 3 hours with the rest of the football players trying to live out their dreams.  We'll just laugh at him when he can't hang with us.  If he want's to talk about hard working, he could have at least checked his sources instead of putting in parenthesis the words "I think."  We'll Mark, I think that is being lazy, but thats just what teachers tell me when I don't feel like citing quotations right away in my papers.  His next point was to tell me I have too many choices.  Well he is 100% right that I have a lot of choices, but their are not too many, I remain busy constantly which is something everyone should do. It makes life interesting to always have something to do, whether is homework, video games, football, or going online for a little bit.  Mr. Bauerlein states that he likes to enjoy old movies in his free time.  I'm proud of him for trying to say he is more hard working than me, and most likely enjoys sitting around watching football games with the family (assuming he has one).  As for the book, I'd say if you need a reason to hate my generation, read it however false it is.  Otherwise, don't waste your time trying to believe in someone who writes about opinionated topics.  He says it himself, most of the time, "their" (meaning my generation) opinions don't matter.  (Neither does yours Mark. Welcome to my generation.)

Did you know?/Shift Happens

Really, after taking a glance at the video of the changes happening with technology in the past couple of years, it is quite overwhelming how much human technology has changed and is changing. The advances in everything that we do and how much we rely on technology goes almost unnoticed until it is pointed out. I take a look at my life and see the reliance on cell phones and computers in order to just get my everyday work done. If you look at it, my entire career is based on technology. The fact that my job will most likely be completely different in four years than what I am training for now scares me a little bit even. I will be very interested into where life meets new computers and technological devices in the next few years and how it affects the way they life. Just know that everything in the video is true and is a great snapshot to reality that people on earth need to see.

The Term "Scholar Athlete"

The term 'Scholar Athlete' is under controversy in many schools saying that it is just an oxymoron and is only true in few outstanding cases.  If you were to read Stan Katz's "Is the Term 'Scholar Athlete' an Oxymoron?" you will find that the term, in his words, is just that.  Though he argues that there are always a couple exceptions to the rule, like the physician playing Florida State football who won the Rhodes Scholarship, and highly respectable scholarship created by Cecil Rhodes.  Now, to really decide whether the term in question is a true oxymoron, you need to speak with a player actually in a football program.  I play football at a smaller division 3 university and I receive help in all directions from coaches along with the help from all of the friends I have met through football.  Now, I am not saying that a division 3 program is as rigorous as a division 1 program, because they are very different in that aspect, but it is hard to measure the help that players may get from coaches, players, and professors close to the program.  Life is all about who you know, and the first day of football you will get to know 100 or more other football players, 30 or more coaches, and you will reap the benefits of being a football player, free tutors, help in a study group, and any other educational tools the program may offer.  So as for the term 'scholar athlete,' I believe it is not an oxymoron but a true statement, and to add to that statement, I think a player may benefit more than he has lost being a player, learning lessons of hard work for the future.

What to love about facebook.

The great thing about facebook is how easy it is to talk to your friends and family. It is great to share pictures with your friends and others you have taken pictures with. You can easily stay in touch with people you may have met on vacation or maybe seen around a college campus. It is really one of the best designed social networks of its kind.

Some times people say it is a very dangerous in terms of security, but, really the person just needs to know how to use his or her privacy settings and show only what they want others to see. This means that facebook is only as secure as you make it and those who do not know how to change thier privacy settings should learn to do so with the plethera of tutorials out their.

Let me know what you think about any of this please by throwing me a comment. Thank you.

Is College Football the Way to Go?

I think college football was one of the smartest decisions I ever made. For starters, I was the first one to move into my dorm room therefore getting first dibs on my bed and my closet, leaving the other two roommates to scavange for a what's left. Reason number two for playing college ball is the fact that you make 110 friends right away from the start. I think its some of the closest thing you have to family around campus (for the first couple weeks anyways), and you make great friends with those who have had a couple years more experience than you at college. I think its a great way to start off college as long as you are willing to put the effort forth to play.
